Going for gold - and pesos

Article Abstract:

The Canadian Institute of Chartered Accountants (CICA) held its 90th annual meeting on Sep 22, 1992. During the event, members gave their approval to financial statements for the year ending Mar 31, 1992 and to a by-law calling for flexibility in selecting candidates for CICA positions. Bank of Nova Scotia Pres Peter Godsoe spoke about the benefits Canada can reap should the proposed North American Free Trade Agreement be ratified, emphasizing opportunities presented by the Mexican market. New CICA Chmn Marc Paradis, meanwhile, spoke about the need for Canada to maintain its competitiveness.

The global economy takes centre stage

Article Abstract:

The International Federation of Accountants sponsored the XIV World Congress of Accountants which was held at the Washington Convention Centre in Washington, DC from Oct 11 to 14, 1992. Attended by 3,000 accountants from 92 countries, the conference had for its theme, 'The Accountant's Role in a Global Economy'. Interdependence among countries, the challenges of the expanding world market and the present status of accountancy were among the topics discussed in the convention.

Alberta Institute hosts Canadian unity dinner

Article Abstract:

The Canadian Institute of Chartered Accountants' Alberta Institute held a dinner forum billed as 'The Business Side of Canada's Constitutional Debate.' Attended by 660 chartered accountants and Alberta business leaders, the forum focused on the constitutional issues facing the Canadian people and government. Speakers included Canada West Foundation president David Elton, Canadian Hunter Exploration Ltd president Jim Gray and Bombardier Inc chairman Laurent Beaudoin.
