IDG dives into fray; can its new Internet business magazine beat the odds?

Article Abstract:

International Data Group (IDG) will launch in May 1998 an Internet magazine geared toward business managers, The Industry Standard. With the multimillion-dollar launch of the weekly newsmagazine, IDG joins an already crowded field that includes Ziff-Davis' Inter@active Week, Internet Week of CMP Media and Internet World of Mecklermedia, not to mention the regular sections and supplements in high-tech and media publications. IDG's entry into the category raises questions on the readership of these Internet magazines, which are hoped to be answered by a circulation research due in Jun 1998.

Since the target audience, software developers who use Microsoft Corp.'s Visual C++ programming language, is very computer literate, the firm took the unusual approach. The firm also runs four conferences a year for developers.
