Investing in Russia: fund groups rushing in

Article Abstract:

New funds are being launched that focus on the Russian stock market prior to Russian presidential elections. The Russian stock market saw a rise of over 35% in share prices in May 1996, and this has increased investors' enthusiasm. Optimists see a boom in investment in Russia through funds with the re-election of Boris Yeltsin. Others warn that there could be problems even if Yeltsin succeeds in being re-elected since budget deficit targets may not be met, and reformers may not be retained in government.

A rising tide lifts all the boats

Article Abstract:

High-yield shares can perform better than trusts aiming to invest for growth. High-yield shares may have policies of higher payouts, or may be recovery stocks with yields reflecting low share prices. Recovery stocks involve risk and speculators seek to purchase stocks which are undervalued. A portfolio with a low level of recovery stocks was selected by Investors Chronicle and did not perform as well as portfolios with a higher proportion of recovery stocks.

High yield portfolio: through all vicissitudes we make our way

Article Abstract:

Value investment strategies involve seeking bargains and ingoring fashions in investment. This is in contrast to a growth strategy of selecting companies that apparently offer quality and future gains in value. Value investment strategies have performed well over the long term, but less well since 1994. A selected portfolio of high-yield shares has been affected by the weight given to utilities which have been hit by political uncertainties.
