Article Abstract:

The assistant director of the Canadian Institute Chartered Accountants' Interprovincial Education Services, Jylan Khalil, has been requested by the Indonesian Ministry of Finance to help the country develop a qualifying accounting examination process. She has also been requested to help the ministry implement a continuing education program for Indonesian accountants. The project is financed by the World Bank as part of its program to help develop the accounting profession in developing countries.

Soling, soling

Article Abstract:

Chartered accountant Joanne Abbott made heads turn when she joined the soling event at the Atlanta Summer Olympics. The sole practitioner had beaten great odds by competing in a sport that historically excluded women. Moreover, she held the center position on the boat as wind tactician and spinnaker handler, a role usually assigned to men weighing more than 200 lbs. Her team was able to finish fifth out of a class of 22.

The culture connection: in the 1990s, Canada's cultural mosaic is creating a new market niche - one with enormous growth potential

Article Abstract:

The growing cultural diversity in Canada is opening a new niche market for chartered accountants. Instead of focusing on function or geography, many Canadian accountants are looking to establish business with the different ethnic groups. Accounting firms who have forged close business relationships with such groups stress the importance of building trust and conforming with the cultural backgrounds of each customer.
