Afghanistan, a landlocked country, is one of the few states in modern history that is severely affected by border vulnerability due to treacherously long borders, extensive cross-border ethnic ties and volatile neighbours. Its efforts and those of the international community to achieve peace, viability and security with implications for regional stability can easily be undermined without staunch and durable external support and secure borders.

The current status of the campaign for the Democratic presidential nomination is summarized. Results of primaries and caucuses in Connecticut, Minnesota, Kansas, Montana and Virginia are reviewed. In New York, both Walter Mondale and Gary Hart are making strong attempts to attract the Jewish vote. Both have consistently favored support of Israel. Hart and Mondale's television campaigns are becoming more hard hitting.
