Gowrings is a United Kingdom restauranteur and automobile dealer which is expanding both activities. The three automobile dealerships sell Ford Motor vehicles and are based in the region of the Thames Valley, England. The company is expanding Burger Kingdom restaurants in the Midlands region of England. and should have 31 restaurants open by the end of Sep 1998, with a further eight to be opened in the three years from 1998. Burger King is likely to resist a recession better than many restaurants.

Running out of road

Article Abstract:

Appleyard plans to close 10 dealerships and sell an additional six, while abandoning plans to invest in a further eight. This follows decisions by manufacturers to reduce the number of dealerships they use. Appleyard has lost nine Volvo dealerships and is withdrawing from a number of Nissan and Vauxhall franchises. The company's chief executive and chairman, Mike Williamson, will cease to carry out executive tasks from the end of 1997 and a chief executive is being sought from outside Appleyard.

Lookers is a UK automobile dealer which saw a drop in profit for 1994 to 1995, with revenues flat during this period. The company is acquiring Charles Hurst, an automobile dealer from Belfast, Northern Ireland, for 25 million pounds sterling. Economic growth in Northern Ireland has benefited from peace and car sales are rising faster than elsewhere in the UK. The finance subsidiary of Charles Hurst will be sold to help lower debt levels resulting from the acquisition.
