The company focuses on savoury snacks and includes Canterbury Foods, which has seven factories, supplying restaurants and stores. Plumtree Farms was acquired in 1999, and this should bring benefits from improved purchasing arrangements. The company exports to more than 30 countries and orders have improved in the few months to May 1999, especially from Far Eastern clients.

Global: a re-rating expected

Global's executive chairman is Ken Manley who has a strong record of achievement. The company is focusing on food manufacturing geared to a wide customer base rather than big retailers which tend to squeeze margins. The company has carried out five acquisitions and aims to expand its catering activities. Global's fork-lift hire activities could be sold since they are no longer central. The company's profit is forecast at 4 million pounds sterling for 1996 by Beeson Gregory.

Metallgesellschaft: back from the brink

Metallgesellschaft is undergoing a recovery and could resume dividend payments in 1997. The group's pre-tax profit rose by 70% to 290 million Germanmarks for 1996. Metallgesellschaft has disposed of unprofitable businesses to focus on metal trading, chemicals and plant engineering, and has scope for acquisitions to bolster these areas. Dynamit Nobel reported sales at the record level of 3.7 billion German marks for 1996 and could expand in Europe.
