Mad or manipulated?

Article Abstract:

Accounting academics have difficulty being accepted as a credible part of the accounting profession. Most practitioners doubt their ability to understand the problems faced daily by auditors and accountants in practice since academics spend all their time cloistered within the four walls of their institutions. It was therefore very surprising that then University of Manchester Vice Chancellor John Arnold was elected president of the Manchester Society in 1991. Now director of the Manchester Business School, Arnold admits that bridging the gap between the two camps of accountants has been a challenging task. He said that his colleagues in the academe thought him to be a puppet of accounting practitioners, while practitioners thought him to be a crazy academic. Nevertheless, Arnold insists that the academic arm of accounting is vital to the profession if it is to be a learning profession.
