Making friends with the taxman

Article Abstract:

British taxpayers have a number of key dates in 2000 which they should observe, as well as ensuring that they benefit from all allowances that they are entitled to. Tax returns for 1998-1999 have to be submitted by Jan 31 2000, or a fine is imposed. Payments for the 1999-2000 tax year are also made by Jan 31 2000. The tax year ends on April 5, a date that is important for pension fund contributions and other investments. Mortgage interest relief is abolished from April 6, as is the married couple's allowance for people aged 65-years-old after April 5.

Tax deadlines are looming

Article Abstract:

United Kingdom taxpayers have to pay their bill for 1996 to 1997, and half the bill for 1997 to 1998, by the end of Jan 1998. Taxpayers who have not sent in returns by the end of the month will be fined 100 pounds sterling, and interest at 9.5% will be charged on tax bills not paid on time. Taxpayers who are not sure how much they owe the authorities can send an approximate sum in order to reduce any interest charges. An additional 5% will be charged on unpaid bills from Feb 28 1998.

CAT and mouse

Article Abstract:

United Kingdom individual savings accounts (Isas) were seen as a way to boost savngs rates among lower income households, but they have not been as popular as was hoped. Standards on charges, access and terms (CAT standards) were seen as a way of boosting savers' confidence in Isas, but CAT standards have instead proved to be confusing for many people. Isas also have more complex regulations than previous schemes. There is a need for greater support for CAT standars. Isas have a useful role to play, despite some of the problems surrounding them.
