Market environment and valuation of invested capital in food manufacturing and distribution industries

Article Abstract:

Capital investments in food manufacturing and food distribution industries are studied to determine the costs and the rates of return on investments. The difference between rate of returns and cost of capital are predicted to be insignificant for all of the industries. These includes groceries, convenience stores, eating establishments, meat processing, dairy, commodities, baking, alcoholic beverages, poultry, fruit and vegetables, cereal, sugar and confectioneries and malt beverages. Results reveal that only food manufacturing industries exhibit consistent return on capital.

The many paths of vertical integration: structural implications for the US food system

Article Abstract:

Food demand in the US is changing from a mass market to an array of smaller market niches created by a faster pace of life, nutritional concerns and demographic shifts. A corresponding structural change has occurred in the food industry as many food companies integrated to aim their products better at many but smaller market niches. Traditional farm and food policies which have become obsolete should be modified to minimize the negative effects of the changing food industry on farmers while ensuring that consumers continue to enjoy high-quality products at low prices.
