Road construction: road tolls a step closer

Article Abstract:

The UK Department of Transport plans to start trials using an electronic tolling system in Jan 1997. Construction companies see tolls as needed to fund future road building programs. The government will increase spending on roads through the private finance initiative (PFI). Meanwhile the budget for road building is being reduced. Tolls are likely to be first introduced on roads constructed through the private finance initiative where shadow tolls are already planned to repay investment.

Construction: road funds crisis

Article Abstract:

The UK government does not plan to offer to private finance initiative (PFI) contracts for roads construction out to tender, according to a private admission from the Department of Transport. The PFI system involves payments in line with usage of roads to be made over a period of years. The future cost may be prohibitive for the government. Construction companies could be pushed out of building roads. One company, Bovis, does not plan further bids due to high preparation costs.

Green pounds

Article Abstract:

Environmental protesters have affected UK road builders, and they are increasing their prices due to the higher costs from deleays and extra security. Companies can increase their profits through making large provisions for the impact of environmental protests, though they can also lose money if they underestimate opposition to road building projects. The UK government may also cancel some projects if protest levels are very high.
