The games are afoot

Article Abstract:

Manchester, England, is seeking to host the Commonwealth Games and the City of Manchester Stadium is to host the main events. A major sports development called Sportcity is being built which includes medical and sports science facilities. Manchester City Council is contributing 30 million pounds sterling to the Sportcity project, and is underwriting the project's operating budget. The region could be regenerated as a result of the Commonwealth Games.

Article Abstract:

The North West Development Agency (NWDA) has set out a draft regional strategy for this Englsh region which is likely to be a poor performer in terms of gross domestic product. Levels of poverty are high . Manchester is a key city with an important role in the NWDA's strategy. Officials in Manchester argue that developments benefiting the city also benefit the region, though there are also differences of opinion on the economic role of Manchester.
