Consolidation life belt for water

Article Abstract:

The British water industry could undergo a period of consolidation, according to the regulator, Ian Byatt. Acquisitions and mergers had previously been opposed by the regulator, but this could change if companies seek to introduce more competition. Thames Water may be the first company to seek to carry out an acquisition, while the water activities of Hyder are seen as a possible target. Consolidation could help boost stocks prices of British water utilities.

Rising tide to wash up predators

Article Abstract:

UK water companies are likely to be the subject of bids following the end of a government prohibition on acquisitions. Water companies are attractive despite the need to finance investment. Conglomerates, French utilities and electric utilities are all likely to take an interest in UK water companies. Southern water could be a target as could South West water. A decision will be made on the regulatory future of South West Water in Mar 1995, and any bid is likely to be delayed until then.

Ofwat fights bosses over water profits

Article Abstract:

The UK Office of Water Services (Ofwat) has emphasised that water utilities should share benefits from efficiency savings with customers, and restraint should be exercised over dividends. Some 50% of UK water companies plan rebates. Water companies have been affected by price restrictions imposed in 1994, which has dampened growth from core businesses. The diversification activities of water utilities have thus become more important. They include Biffa, the waste management division of Severn Trent.
