Pentagon leaders urge fast prep of Iraqi security for June 30

Article Abstract:

The Pentagon has suggested that the Bush administration speed up the efforts to increase the capability of Iraqi security forces in time for the transfer of power to Iraq on June 30. However both Deputy Defense Secretary Paul Wolfowitz and Air Force General Richard Myers have stressed that the importance lies in bringing Iraqi troops to the fore in keeping security as the transfer of authority will have little practical significance until there is a decrease in the presence of U.S. troops.

Expert: Missile defense will alter, but continue

Article Abstract:

Lowell Wood, senior staff scientist at the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory stated that the US ballistic missile defense system will continue even though successors to US President George W. Bush are likely to cut and change the program. Successive administrations will have to pursue ballistic missile defense, one way or another, or leave the US at the mercy of any hostile power that is capable of simply buying and aiming the right kind of missile.

House subcommittee: Pentagon 'neglecting basics'

Article Abstract:

The Bush administration's proposed defense budget for fiscal 2007 has raised worries among House members concerning the routine day-to-day readying and equipping of the armed services in 2006. Rep. Joel Hefley, chairman of the readiness subcommittee of the House Armed Services Committee (HASC) believes that the administration had made a troubling emphasis on future-looking transformation issues at the expense of today's more immediate needs.
