Production of a recombinant bacterial lipoprotein in higher plant chloroplasts

Article Abstract:

Transplastomic tobacco plants that accumulate the outer surface lipoprotein A (OspA), the basic constituent of the first generation monovalent human vaccine against Lyme disease, were generated and the gene encoding OspA is expressed. The recombinant OspA is found to exhibit a lipid modification typical for bacteria and induce protective antibodies in mice, demonstrating that functionally active bacterial lipoproteins can be processed in plants.

Regulating transgenic crops sensibly: Lessons from plant breeding, biotechnology and genomics

Article Abstract:

Some specific changes in regulatory approaches based on extensive experience with conventionally bred crops, the first generations of transgenic crops and the growing knowledge of the complexity of genome structure and dynamics are presented. In conventional breeding, regulatory emphasis should be on phenotypic rather than genomic characteristics once a gene or trait is shown to be safe.

Fungal genomics goes industrial

Article Abstract:

A high-throughput functional genomics study of the rice blast fungus Magmaporthe oryzae was conducted by Jeon et al. The results involved the generation of more than 20,000 mutants of Magmaporthe oryzae and unravel the genetic basis of pathogenicity.
