Article Abstract:

Quicks Commercial Stationery Company (London) took advantage of the UK Training Agency's Business Growth Training (BGT) program in order to overcome a plateau of growth and expansion that it had reached by enhancing management skills through training and development. The program entails the use of an outside consultant and is intended to bring about a reformulation of corporate strategy, the implementation of a realistic business plan, and the development of the business and employees by fine tuning managerial experience. The program relates training and development to strategic goals. The program gave the firm a mission and a business plan and strategy based on realistic goals and effected a new organizational structure that allowed the firm to realize a 28% increase in turnover in the financial year 1989/90.
