Article Abstract:

Herman Miller Inc.'s SQA division helps clients design, specify, and order desired furniture systems at an affordable price, and delivers the products within two weeks. Its service has given SQA an edge over volume-based furniture manufacturers. It has been made possible largely because of SQA's proprietary Z-Axis and Z-Net software that enable salespeople and clients to visualize furniture within a computer-generated, three-dimensional simulated space. The software also calculates the clients' order and sends it to the factory in real time.

Sigmar Willnauer/Goods

Article Abstract:

Sigmar Willnauer, owner of the firm Goods, believes that utility is the most important factor to consider in product designing. Although German ideas of design have influenced his works, his stay in the West Coast of the US has significantly affected his utilitarian ideas. Willnauer is also an outdoor enthusiast, fascinated by recycled materials. Willnauer effectively juxtaposes his servile attitude towards land and its materials with his carefree West Coast lifestyle in his works.

Off track

Article Abstract:

Superbike II was designed to be the fastest and most sophisticated bicycle ever built. The US Cycling Team was hoping to use the $30,000 bikes to win the gold in the Atlanta Olympics but they only managed to win two second-place finishes. Its developers insist that the team's failure to win top honors was due to the human factor and not technical shortcomings. Many of Superbike II's design innovations are expected to appear in commercial versions in the near future.
