Regulator signals end to electricity's salad days

Article Abstract:

UK electric utilities have undergone a price review by Stephen Littlechild, regulator for the industry. The review means that high profits and dividend growth will be affected, according to industry analysts. Dividends are likely to be reduced or remain stable. Some smaller companies such as SWALEC and Manweb could see a drop in profit of 20% or over. Dividend cover will have to be reduced if dividends are to be increased, and shares in these companies will become less attractive.

The monster rears its head: despite the chancellor's brave efforts, it is far from certain that the inflation beast has been slain. Recent evidence suggestsit may only be slumbering

Article Abstract:

High street prices were kept in check by tough competition and continuous sales in 1994. Eddie George, governor of the Bank of England and Kenneth Clarke, chancellor, believed that inflation was conquered. However there could be higher prices in 1995. Equities offer better protection than bonds from inflation and stocks that should gain most from inflation include food manufacturers, hoteliers and housebuilders.
