Screen gems

Article Abstract:

The screensaver has evolved into an important communications tool and even into an art form. It started out simply as a device for preventing images from being permanently etched onto the cathode-ray tube. Early versions showed only fixed background images with constantly moving overlays, which were designed to ensure that no image was displayed long enough to be burned onto the computer screen. Screensavers have grown more sophisticated over the years even though their original purpose is no longer relevant since innovations in computer screens have reduced the need to protect screens. They are now being used more for their entertainment value and as a means for computer users to express their personalities. Entertainment, marketing, advertising and online information service providers are also starting to use screensavers for promotional activities.

Microsoft vs the world

Article Abstract:

Microsoft Corp and its legendary founder Bill Gates seem bent on dominating the markets that they have chosen to enter. The company is already the uncontested market leader in personal computing, and is planning to achieve the same status in the Internet arena. It is in an enviable position of having the resources to succeed in any business it ventures into, having cash reserves of over $10 billion and no debts. Gates himself is the wealthiest man in the world, with assets of around $50 billion or just a little less than the GDP of Ireland. The antitrust actions that Microsoft currently faces may eventually hurt the company, but they may also compel it to look for new markets where it is likely to become an active player.
