Sears

Article Abstract:

Sears has faced problems from poor buying for Miss Selfridge in 1st half 1995. Excess stock sales at British Shoe Corp and Olympus has also created problems. Selfridges saw a rise in profit of over 20% to 11 million pounds sterling, and home shopping saw a rise in profit to 18.5 million pounds in the abover period. The company needs to shed inconsistent performers. Sears' profit is forecast at 130 million pounds sterling for full-year 1995 by BZW, a drop on a previous forecast of 150 million pounds.

Rosebys: streets ahead

Article Abstract:

Rosebys is a UK textile retailer which has been affected by a sluggish UK real estate market. The company acquired Shalets, a retail chain, in 1995, in addition to 13 discount stores acquired from Knightingales and 90 stores acquired from Lonrho. Lower overheads and greater strength in purchasing resulting from these acquisitions should boost the company's profits. The company should also benefit from revival in UK consumer confidence and in the UK housing market.

Clinton Cards: seasonal promise

Article Abstract:

Clinton Cards is a UK retailer of greetings cards and has seen a recovery in its share price in 1995 after a previous drop. The company holds a stake of 11% in the UK market for greetings cards shops and has acquired two major competitors, leaving it as the biggest such specialized retailer in the UK. The Carlton chain with 112 shops was acquired in Sep 1995 and is a positive sign, indicating that the previous acquisition of Hallmark has been a success.
