Senators, Mullen say Navy needs more funds for ships

Article Abstract:

Adm. Michael Mullen, President Bush's nominee to be the next chief of naval operations, has said before the Senate Armed Services Committee (SASC) that the Navy requires more money to build more ships than currently planned and the funding should flow in a steady fashion to contractors. The impact of Navy's decision to build few DD (X) destroyers and subsequent decision to give that work to only one shipyard in the U.S. is discussed.

DD(X), CG(X) spending constraints pose Navy, industry hurdles

Article Abstract:

A cash-strapped Navy might fund one next-generation DD(X) destroyer and CG(X) cruiser for the foreseen budget future that would create a major loss of business for shipyards. The price tag on a single DD(X) might increase to more than $2.7 billion that compares to official Navy estimates of $1.2 billion to $1.4 billion per ship.

Analyst, key lawmaker say case not made for LCS, DD(X)

Article Abstract:

The U.S. Navy is using the research and development funds to acquire new generation ships like the Littoral Combat Ship and the next generation DD(X) destroyer. Critics argue that by using the R&D funds, the Navy is avoiding the rigorous process, which requires hard proof for justifying the acquisition program.
