Solving emerging market finance woes

Article Abstract:

Pooled project securities is a good alternative in financing infrastructure projects by traditional methods in emerging markets. The approach is a form of structured finance funded on the ground of projected cash input from a portfolio of projects. Dallas, TX-based Panda Energy International utilized this approach in 1997 to finance its power projects. The development and construction Panda's Luannan project, a 100 megawatt (MW) coal-fired facility in China, was funded by $155.2 million of 12.5% senior secured notes that is due on 2004 and subsidized by Donaldson, Lufkin & Jenrette.
