Special focus: challenges for the euro area

Article Abstract:

A brief overview of the implications of the economic and monetary union (EMU) on financial markets was presented. Discussions were focused on three broad issues such as the effects of the EMU on government securities markets and the management of public debt. The effects of the EMU on the corporate securities markets was also discussed. Finally, discussions were also focused on the effects of the EMU on structural change and institutional competition in the financial sector.

Highlights of recent developments in financial markets

Article Abstract:

Highlights of developments in financial markets in various countries are discussed. As the euro was launched, the currency was strengthened due to the interest of foreign investors in government bonds in the euro-area. In the US, there is a decline in foreign interests in the stock markets. The Japanese yen remained strong despite the decline in financial markets in the country. In Brazil, the currency depreciated as authorities decided to float the Brazilian Real.

EMU and the evolution of financial structure

Article Abstract:

An outline of the consequences of the economic and monetary union (EMU) was presented. Factors that could affect the evolution of the European financial markets were noted while changes in fiscal and monetary arrangements that will be limited by the EMU were also identified. Effects of the EMU on banking, institutional investment, securities markets and corporate finance that could delay the financial integration process will also be discussed.
