Spring cleaning at Electrolux

Article Abstract:

Electrolux stocks rose in value after the company announced a program to cut costs in 1997, which included shedding 12,000 jobs or 11% of the company's work force world wide. The company aims to improve its operating margins to between 6.5% and 7% from 2.3% in 1997. The company has a large turnover but this has not generated sufficient profit, and competition is intense in the domestic appliance market. Electrolux also has a range of brands while competitors used more unified branding.

Pifco: nearly on the boil

Article Abstract:

Pifco is a producer of electrical appliances which is prepared to resist pressure from retailers to cut prices. The company acquired Russell Hobbs in 1991 and this initially hit results, but Russell Hobbs' performance has since improved. Pifco has also developed a new element for kettles which could boost the market in the same way as the introduction of jug kettles. The company should also benefit from a revival in consumer spending in the UK.
