Staying single in Japan

Article Abstract:

The Japanese banking industry continues to decline despite government and private efforts to revive the sector. The possibility of consolidating the sector is nil, despite evidences which show that mergers can eliminate overlapping operations and unnecessary expenditures. The negative attitude toward mergers in the industry can be attributed to the Japanese's aversion to downsizing and restructuring. Industry analysts believe that these reasons will make the merger talks between Mitsui Trust and Banking and Chuo Trust and Banking the last of its kind in the industry.
