Upbeat message from Japan

Article Abstract:

Some small companies have been successful in Japan, despite a difficult environment. Investors are showing increased interest in smaller firms in Japan. Portfolios that are highly focused are the key to success when investing in Japan. There are five main categories of firms, including companies in industries like telemarketing, which are new to Japan. Companies catering for the needs of older people are in another category, which is likely to benefit from the ageing of Japan's population. There are also niche companies, internet companies, and companies in sectors where Japan has global leadership.

Entrepreneurs - born or made?

Article Abstract:

Between 10% and 20% of the labor force was self-employed in 23 countries surveyed in 1997, whereas 40% of those in Britain wanted to be self-employed. Access to start-up funds is importance, and those people surveyed who had a gift or inheritance were more likely to be self-employed. Shortage of capital is seen as a major impediment for those wanting to be self-employed and unable to. Most small businesses in Britain are started with funds from the family or from the entrepreneur, rather than from banks.
