The Russian roller coaster

Article Abstract:

The political and economic climate of Russia for future foreign investments is discussed. Investors and business executives are apprehensive in adapting to a more assertive state role in Russia's natural resource sector. Their concerns have been sparked by the crackdown on Mr. Khodorkovsky and Yukos, his oil company, which faces court on tax charges that could lead to bankruptcy. But, president Putin appears more ambivalent, and stresses the need for stability and reiterated his support for the transparent sale of licenses for investments through auction. While Putin's political concerns are clear, the impact on foreign investors of his maneuvering cannot be easily inferred.
