The presence of a separate COO/president and its impact on strategic change and CEO dismissal

Article Abstract:

A study is carried out to examine the leadership structure at the top layer of a firm, emphasizing how the presence of a COO/president, who is separate from the CEO, affects strategic change and CEO dismissal. It is found that, when the firm's performance is high, the presence of a separate COO/president decreases the magnitude of strategic change and it has no impact on the likelihood of CEO dismissal.

The incidence and effectiveness of CEO/COO duos is examined with the use of the contingency theory. It is found that CEOs who lack experience in operational activities and in managing the focal firm are relatively likely to have COOs.
