The rise and rise of franchising

Article Abstract:

The year 2005 was a record-breaking time for franchising when, for the first time, the industry's annual turnover rose 13% to Pounds Sterling 10.3 billion, and the number of franchise systems grew at its fastest rate since 1999. Franchising offers a strong degree of independence and scope for enterprise, and although it can be a cutthroat business, it can also prove to be a low risk/high-reward investment, if one finds the right retail or service format and plans to build a strong business.

No time for prima donnas: Tough demands could be putting potential NEDs off committing to the role

Article Abstract:

A report by Whitehead Mann, based on interviews with 124 top directors representing 552 listed companies, suggests that the level of multiple directorship has hardly changed since 2000. So, the old boys' network of non-executive directors (NEDs) will have its grip in the city, and since the responsibilities, risks and time commitments of NEDs have increased, there may be a growing shortage of candidates with the right skill sets.
