Article Abstract:

Pensions may not provide as much as expected for a number of reasons, such as misselling, poor performance of the pension fund, broad economic changes, and changes in personal circumstances. Pensions are long term investments, and both inflation and interest rates have dropped in the 25 years to 2000. Index trackers are useful investments, and this leads to the question of which index to select. Pensions offer tax advantages, but annuity rates have dropped, and some people are using other investment modes for their retirement planning.

The yield is not enough

Article Abstract:

Corporate bond funds have been attractive among retail investors, offering modest capital growth and better income prospects than most relatively safe investments. There is concern that there is a greater risk of capital ersoion than was previously believed. Bonds may tend to be less volatile than equities, but the market can be affected by volatility. This affects people investing lump sums, rather than those who invest smaller amounts on a regular basis. Corporate bonds still offer a number of advantages for investors seeking security.

Standing still?

Article Abstract:

Free-standing additional voluntary contributions are a way for employees in occupational pension schemes to add to their pensions, especially when they have missed contributions for a few years. They can also add to contributions where they have not contributed to maximum levels permitted by the Inland Revenue. They are inflexible, but this imposes discipline on savers. They tend to cost more than additional voluntary contributions, provided in-house.
