Trading mechanisms and trading preferences on a 24-hour futures market: a case study of the Floor/GLOBEX switch on MATIF

Article Abstract:

MATIF provides a 24-hour non-interrupted trading cycle through two distinct trading mechanisms, namely, an open-outcry system on the floor and after- hours trading through an automated continuous auction system on GLOBEX. Trading volume on the floor was found to be considerably higher than trading conducted on GLOBEX around the switch of trading mechanism. This can be due to a number of factors, including trade immediacy against transaction cost, liquidity trading by locals, transparency vs. anonymity and inertia to trade under a new mechanism.
