Choosing a stockbroker

Article Abstract:

UK investors can choose from a wide range of stockbrokers from single person enterprises to large companies. Investors need to decide on the level of service they require such as the level of advice and whether they want a broker to be proactive. Investors will be constrained by the availability of funds to invest and should assess total returns excluding charges instead of basic cost levels. Brokers should also have enough information about investors to provide the right advice.

Spotlight on stockbroker safety

Article Abstract:

The Investors Compensation Scheme (ICS) provides some security for UK investors in the event that their stockbrokers become insolvent. There is a limit of 48,000 pounds sterling for each investor, and security has become a more important concern of investors since the collapse of Barings. Insolvency covered is offered by ShareLink and Fidelity, both UK brokers. Most UK brokers do not offer such cover, though they are aware of the need to reassure investors.
