UK: ALDI STRUGGLES TO KEEP LOW SPENDERS

Article Abstract:

A new survey reveals that Aldi's attraction for low-spending shoppers is being challenged by stores such as Asda and Morrisons. Aldi is the main grocery store for 2% of the population, but it is failing to attract new shoppers. The report found that Aldi customers, 81% of whom are C2Ds, visit stores less frequently than other grocery shoppers, mention friendly staff and service less frequently than the customers of other grocery multiples, and attach greater importance to price and value for money. One third would like to see more own-brand products. The chain is attracting more visits per square foot than it did six months ago, but national expansion would require improved retail appeal.
