(Under)ground control

Article Abstract:

Several Dutch and other European cities have installed the latest in trash disposal bins on urban sidewalks. A large hole is dug, lined with concrete and filled with a steel container able to hold more than 1,300 gallons. The top of the container protrudes about three feet above the level of the sidewalk and acts as a rubbish chute. Bins for recyclables may also be nearby. The chutes seal themselves off so no odors emanate from within . A truck empties the containers once or twice a week in a clean and efficient eight-minute process. About 6,000 of the containers are in use in the Netherlands.

Premium blend

Article Abstract:

Composite materials offer the advantages of light weight, durability, anti-corrosive properties, and ease of transportation, installation and maintenance. The design industry has taken note and is incorporating such materials into everyday applications such as surfaces, decorative panels, finishes and consumer products. For example, Textiles Inc. (Los Angeles, CA) offers custom weaves of fiber-reinforced polymers to lend a 3-D look to such items as hockey stcks and bike fenders. Centera (Sweden) offers Wrigt On!, a glass/fiber/aluminium blend for use in erase boards and decorative surfaces.
