United Carriers

Article Abstract:

United Carriers aims to expand its core activities distributing parcels and dealing with freight. The company appointed Doug Rogers as chairman in 1995. He also aims to boost margins and improve service. Volumes were affected by a decision to withdraw from low-margin packages of awkward shape, in addition to bad weather in 1st half 1996. Carpet Express, a carpet logistics concern, has performed well, though Mansped, which deals with freight for automotive companies, had problems with a contract that affected turnover.

NFC

Article Abstract:

NFC's pre-tax profit for FY 1994-1995 was affected by restructuring provisions of 35 million pounds sterling. The company is shutting down poorly performing businesses and job losses are planned. Operating profits fell prior to provisions, with bad debts, currency provisions and lower pension credit among the causes. A pre-tax profit of 55 million pounds sterling is forecast for 1995-1996 after provisions, by UBS, and the company's shares are seen as offering good value in June 1995.
