MA Bell takes a tumble

Article Abstract:

AT and T has seen a drop in its share price following a profit warning. Earnings per share for the quarter to Mar 1997 are likely to be around 10% less than the same period in 1996. New entrants have eroded the company's market share, and losses from developing businesses are likely to rise. The company forecasts a rise in earnings per share over the longer term. The company's shares have underperformed over the longer term and this and the short-term drop in share prices indicates that the market is uncertain about the company's prospects.

China calls the shots

Article Abstract:

Cable and Wireless (C and W) has sold an additional stake in Hong Kong Telecom. C and W believes that this sale will help it gain access to the Chinese market but this view is contradicted by the Chinese Ministry of Post and Telecommunications which has stated that its policy on foreign investment in the sector has not changed. Both C and W and Hong Kong Telecom saw rises in their stock prices following the announcement of the sale.
