Who's regulating what?

Article Abstract:

Government regulation of business remains necessary, notwithstanding complaints from the private sector about being overregulated. Nowhere is the need for government intervention more evident than in bank policies for interest rates on credit card financing. Banks' unscrupulous practice of applying different credit card terms for borrowers and non-borrowers, which imposes usurious interest rates on the former, constitutes market abuse and smacks of illegality. Their abuses will only be curbed if they were to be required to disclose the real rate of interest.

Would bigger banks be better?

Article Abstract:

Canadian banks are proposing the relaxation of laws that prevent them from merging or being acquired by foreign banks. They claim that these restrictions undermine their ability to compete in the world market. However, it is argued that Canadian banks have sufficient resources for growth without needing foreign partners. Bank shareholders will also be the sole beneficiaries of any easing of restrictions.
