Wm Morrison Supermarkets

Article Abstract:

Wm Morrison Supermarkets faces strong competition but has reported record profits and rising sales for 1999-2000. The company has 101 stores, and is expanding, and could increase its market share by expanding in southern England, away from its traditional based in the north. The company's pre-tax profit is forecast at 205 million pounds sterling for 2000-2001 by Charterhouse Securities. Wm Morrison has almost no borrowings and its stocks are cheaper than those of Tesco, the leader in this market.

Tesco has the edge

Article Abstract:

Tesco is a UK food retailer which saw a 14% rise in its share price in 1994 and has performed better in terms of share price and volume sales than its UK rival, Sainsbury. Tesco's Value Lines have performed better than Sainsbury's Essentials, and Tesco appears to be better aware of the changes that UK food retailing is undergoing. Sainsbury may improve its performance in 2nd half 1995. The UK food retailing sector is faced with low inflation which makes profits more difficult to achieve.

Work to do at Sainsbury

Article Abstract:

J Sainsbury is a UK supermarket chain which has issued a profit warning. The company's sales growth has been lower than the level of inflation for food prices during the 16 weeks to the middle of January 1996. The company's shares have underperformed and it is operating in a market where there is overcapacity. The company was a pioneer in out-of-town supermarkets and it also developed private label sales. Competitors have followed these innovations.
