Addressing the needs of dual-career couples

Article Abstract:

A workshop was held at the University of Connecticut to study if there is a need to provide job program services to dual-career families. The workshop was attended by 14 people belonging to the 19 to 54 age bracket who were either graduating from college or employed. Participants discussed conflicts that result from a couple's pursuit of separate careers. The workshop revealed that younger participants were more concerned about immediate career needs while the older ones worried more about their family obligations.

The Liberal Arts and Sciences Group of the Midwest Assn of Colleges and Employers has proposed a college placement services program that would meet the challenges faced by liberal arts college career centers. Services offered by various centers were evaluated. Some of the services helped students identify their job skills and prepare for life after college. The group proposed a partnership among faculty, alumni, students and the career services offices in mapping successful career development programs.

Student dreams and the real international job market

Article Abstract:

The international job market has become an attractive alternative for students as globalism exerts its influence. However, students should keep in mind that it takes more than language skills to land foreign jobs. Qualifications should include job skills and experience which are usually acquired in local companies and take years to develop. Career counsellors can help students to focus their search for overseas jobs and assess themselves carefully so that they can plan their careers accordingly.
