Aventis may shed AG unit

Article Abstract:

Aventis SA is planning to split off its crop protection division, to be renamed Agreva, by yearend 2001. The options include an initial public offering and a sale to a single buyer. However, any transaction may be blocked by Schering AG, a minority stockholder. Schering has the ability to veto major decisions since it owns 24% of Aventis stock. One Schering concern is the public's wariness of genetically modified crops, especially Aventis' own StarLink corn.
