WORLD: AMINO ACIDS IN ANIMAL FEEDS

Article Abstract:

According to Adolf Togel of Commserv, a Frankfurt-based subsidiary of Hoechst, the world market for amino acids is worth about DM 7bn to 8bn annually. Consumption of the animal feed additives methionine and lysine amounted to 370,000 tonnes and 350,000 tonnes, respectively, in 1998. The world market for methionine has been growing at an annual rate of just under 7% since 1993, and a 4-5% annual growth is forecast. America accounts for 48% of consumption, Europe 26%, east Asia 22% and the Middle East and Africa 4%. Worldwide capacity is estimated at 530,000 tpy, but it is to rise to 800,000 tpy by the end of 2000. The consumption of lysine is forecast to grow at an annual rate of 7-8%, compared with 9-10% in the last five years. Asia accounts for 40% of consumption, America 35% and Europe 25%. Production capacity worldwide at the end of 1998 amounted to 640,000 tpy. Due to overcapacity, some manufacturers may review their investment plans in both methionine and lysine. Glutamine, methionine and lysine account for 70% to 75% of the world market for amino acids in value terms.
