Small agricultural retailers are looking for means to stay viable as major retail players plan to consolidate. Recent mergers involving Cenex Harvest States and Farmland Industries and Cenex/Land O'Lakes Agronomy and Terra Industries will create mega-cooperatives that would be unrivaled in the entire US. Consolidation is far from over but small retailers still have the advantage of having the ability to quickly answer the needs of customers and respond to market changes, as well as having a less bureaucratic type of management.
