Complete assignment of 13C NMR spectra and determination of orientational order parameter for antiferroelectric liquid-crystalline MHPOBC

Article Abstract:

The assignment of the 13C nuclear magnetic resonance lines for the isotropic and oriented samples of the antiferroelectric liquid-crystalline MHPOBC and its analogue TFMHPOBC was completed to determine the location of the molecular long axis and the value of the orientational order parameter. Two of the six lines in each of the protonated and nonprotonated aromatic lines were found to exhibit a less pronounced temperature dependence. The orientational order parameter was found to be 0.73 at 403 K in the S(sub A) phase.

High-resolution 13C NMR study of an antiferroelectric liquid crystal: verification of the bent chain structure

Article Abstract:

13C nuclear magnetic resonance experiments were performed on the antiferroelectric liquid crystal MHPOBC, 4-[(1-methylheptyloxy)carbonyl]phenyl 4-[4-(octyloxy)biphenyl]carboxyalte to investigate its chain geometries. The average direction of the chiral chain was found to deviate from the molecular long axis by up to 43 degrees. The average direction of the achiral chain was found to extend along the molecular long axis.

(super 31)P and (super 13)C NMR studies of a liquid-crystalline cyclotriphosphazene derivative: orientational characteristics and contrasting shielding anisotropies for inorganic and organic moietie

Article Abstract:

The fundamental liquid-crystalline properties of a cyclotriphosphazene (ctp) derivative, hexakis[4-dodecyl(4-biophenoxy)]ctp are analyzed by means of (super 31)P and (super 13)C NMR spectroscopies. The present ctp derivative exhibits a molecular structure in the liquid-crystalline state as illustrated.
