EPA review far from over

Article Abstract:

The EPA is expected to focus its attention on the organophosphate Orthene insecticide soon. Orthene is used on cotton but has to go through a lot of tolerance reassessments under the Food Quality Protection Act. The federal agency is concerned about the high rates of use of Orthene in Arizona and California, about one pound per acre. The EPA has to conduct a risk/benefit analysis since worker safety issues are dealt with under the Federal Insecticide, Fungicide and Rodenticide Act.

Complimentary Chemistry

Bayer Corp's expansion of its fungicides and insecticides, both current and future products, into seed treatment products is a fundamental key to the company's ag-chem strategy. Kansas City, MO-based Bayer Agriculture Division has acknowledged the transgenic movement, but it still wants to focus on its main competencies, agricultural chemicals that complement biotech products.
