GERMANY: TRAFRFIC ACCIDENTS WITH HAZARDOUS GOODS

Article Abstract:

According to the trade journal Gefahrliche Ladung, 142 accidents involving hazardous transports were recorded on Germany's roads in 1998, compared with 130 in 1997. Leaks of hazardous materials occurred in 59 (76) of the accidents. The volume of hazardous materials leaked in the accidents decreased 25% to 154.8 tonnes, of which about 75% was inflammable liquids. About 60% of the accidents involved tank lorries. The number of railway accidents involving tank wagons fell from 28 to 4 in 1998.

TURKEY: LURGI ENTSORGUNG TO SET UP PLANT

Article Abstract:

German Lurgi Entsorgung GmbH of Frankfurt/Ratingen received an order from the Turkish city of Istanbul for the turnkey construction of a sorting and composting facility for domestic waste. The order is valued at DM 65mn. The facility using Buhler technology is due to start operation in October 1999. The project will be internationally financed to ensure its realisation. Lurgi Entsorgung is a 100% subsidiary of Frankfurt-based Lurgi Umwelt GmbH.
