Polarized infrared spectroscopic study on hindered rotation around the molecular axis in the smectic-C* phase of a ferroelectric liquid crystal with a naphthalene ring. Application of two-dimensional correlation spectroscopy to polarization angle-dependent spectral variations

Article Abstract:

It has been possible to investigate a new ferroelectric liquid crystal with a naphthalene ring which has a bookshelf layer structure for a specific alignment of the film in the Sm-C* phase. The potential of 2D correlation spectroscopy in detection of small differences in the polarization angle dependent intensity variations is highlighted.

Earlier response of carbonyl groups in electric-field-induced dynamics of a ferroelectric liquid crystal with a naphthalene ring studied by submicrosecond multichannel asynchronous time-resolved FT-IR spectroscopy

Article Abstract:

A time-dependent response of different molecular segment is investigated by using submicrosecond multichannel asynchronous time-resolved FT-IR spectroscopy. It was demonstrated that the two carbonyl groups of FLC-1 respond first on switching the electric field and then the alkyl chain and the mesogen follow.

Characterization of Langmuir-Blodgett films of a ferroelectric liquid crystal

Article Abstract:

Molecular orientation, structure, and phase transition behaviors in Langmuir-Blodgett (LB) and cast films of a ferroelectric liquid crystal of sec-butyl 6-(4-(nonyloxy)benzoyloxy)-2-naphthoate is determined by ultraviolet spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction, and infrared spectroscopy. Two kinds of layered of isomeric crystal structures of the LB films with layer spacing of 3 and 3.5 nanometer at room temperature were found while the latter disappear above 45 degree Celsius.
