Re-entrant nematic behavior in the 70CB+90CB mixtures: Evidence for multiple nematic-smectic tricritical points

Article Abstract:

Modulated differential scanning calorimetry (MDSC) and optical microscopy measurements are used to determine the metastable phase diagram of the two-component system heptyloxycyanobiphenyl (7OCB)+nonyloxycyanobiphenyl (9OCB). The results have shown that the critical behavior is comparable, irrespective of if the phase transition to a Sm[A.sub.d] (bilayer smetic A) mesophase from nematic (N) or re-entrant nematic (RN) mesophases occurs.

Liquid crystal mixtures of 80CB+10OCB. Evidence for a smectic A-to-nematic tricritical point

Article Abstract:

The two-component system octyloxycyanobiphenyl (80CB) + decyloxycyanobiphenil (100CB) is studied by means of modulated differential scanning calorimetry as well as optical microscopy. The smectic mesophase of the 80CB+10OCB mixtures are characterized through optical measurements as smectic A for the whole composition range.

Reentrant behavior in binary mixtures of (octyloxy)cyanobiphenyl (80CB) and the shorter chain homologue (heptyloxy)cyanobiphenyl (70CB)

Article Abstract:

Modulated differential scanning calorimetry (MDSC), optical, and X-ray diffraction measurements are carried out in order to completely characterize the 70CB + 80CB two-component system. The experimental results confirm the existence of a monotropic reentrant nematic phase.
