Role of counterion concentration in determining micelle aggregation: evaluation of the combination of constraints from small-angle neutron scattering, electron paramagnetic resonance, and time-resolved fluorescence quenching

Article Abstract:

Small-angle neutron scattering (SANS) is used to study a series of aqueous solutions of the anionic surfactant sodium dodecyl sulfate and the simple electrolyte sodium chloride and the cationic surfactants dodecytrimethylammonium bromide and dodecyltrimethylammonium chloride, in the presence of sodium bromide and sodium chloride, respectively. According to a hypothesis such a series is expected to produce micelles having the same aggregation number, that is verified by time resolved fluorescence quenching (TRFQ) and electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR).

A definition of the degree of ionization of a micelle based on its aggregation number

Article Abstract:

A definition of the degree of ionization of a micelle based on its aggregation number is studied to illustrate the measurement of alpha on the basis of the definition. The Poisson-Boltzmann equation indicates that the constancy of alpha is in accord with theoretical arguments.

Effect of the nature of the counterion on the properties of anionic surfactants. 2. Aggregation number-based micelle ionization degrees for micelles of tetraalkylammonium

Article Abstract:

The ionization degrees of tetramethyl, tetraethyl, tetrapropyl and tetrabutylammonium dodecylsulfate micelles are investigated by applying the hypothesis that the aggregation number at a given temperature is determined solely by C(sub aq).
