Cotton on the rebound

Article Abstract:

The cotton market experienced a severe downturn in 1999 but may be able to rebound strongly in 2000 because of advances in biotechnology that promise the maximization of planted acreage as well as high crop yields. For example. Monsanto's Roundup UltraMAX will be available for Roundup Ready cotton in 2000. It is claimed to have 25% more active ingredients than Roundup Ultra and enhances plant uptake, translocation and 'rainfastness.' Novartis, Bayer, Cheminova, Rohm and Haas Co and Valent USA Corp also have proprietary products which should help growers 'make' cotton better and efficiently.

Harvest 2000: anything goes

Article Abstract:

The raging debate on biotech crops has prompted many farmers to formulate their harvest plans for 2000 earlier than usual. Discussions center around whether demand for conventional crops will soar by harvest time due to what some see as an inevitable segregating of biotech and traditional crops. Legislation, an increase in foreign demand, and growing domestic pressure could push demand for conventional crops in 2000.
