Effect of viscosity on the kinetics of alpha-helix and beta-hairpin formation

Article Abstract:

The effect of viscosity on the kinetics of alpha-helix and beta-hairpin formation in peptides containing 21 and 16 amino acids are determined by nanosecond laser temperature jumps and fluorescence detection. Analysis of the temperature dependence at fixed solvent compositions reported no effects on the activation energies and slowing of the relaxation rates upon addition of sugars due to their dynamical effect of increasing the solvent viscosity (eta).

The principles of alpha-helix formation: explaining complex kinetics with nucleation-elongation theory

Article Abstract:

A detailed model of alpha-helix formation is developed. This model is based on a simple nucleation-elongation description of alpha-helix formation and incorporates sequences dependence factors from a previous equilibrium implementation of helix-coil theory.
